DSBC Standard Cylinder: Eliminating the Cushioning Setup Step

End-of-stroke cushioning in pneumatic actuators has long been a “simple in principle, time-consuming in practice” problem. Conventional cylinders require on-site adjustment of cushioning screws to match load, speed, friction, and working pressure — a slow, inconsistent process where any change in parameters can produce impact, noise, and wear. Festo’s DSBC family of ISO 15552 standard cylinders removes that step entirely with PPS self-adjusting cushioning.

The DSBC is Festo’s new-generation square-bodied (profile) standard cylinder for standard applications, conforming to ISO 15552 (formerly ISO 6431 / VDMA 24562). Double-acting, it covers piston diameters from 32 to 125 mm with strokes up to 2,800 mm. It is fully interchangeable with the earlier DNC and DNCB series, so equipment upgrades or spare-part replacements require no mounting changes.

PPS: Self-Adjusting Cushioning at Both Ends

The DSBC’s standout feature is PPS (Pneumatic cushioning, self-adjusting) — pneumatic cushioning that automatically adapts at both ends of the cylinder. When load mass, travel speed, friction, or working pressure change, PPS adjusts its cushioning behavior on its own, bringing the piston to the end of stroke smoothly and impact-free without manual intervention.

The payoff is multi-fold: the design phase no longer needs iterative cushioning calculations, and installation and commissioning time drop sharply. In operation, reduced impact and vibration cut wear on the cylinder and connected mechanics and extend service life. “Setup-free” also means higher consistency across the line and greater process reliability. Festo representatives introducing the product stressed that the DSBC family is aimed squarely at saving customers significant design and installation time.

Cushioning and Sensing Options

To suit different conditions, the DSBC offers several cushioning options: type P (elastic cushioning rings/plates at both ends, for low-speed light loads), type PPV (pneumatic cushioning, adjustable at both ends, for applications needing fine-tuned cushioning position), and the flagship PPS (self-adjusting at both ends). Variants with a magnetic piston are typically ordered as “DSBC-…-PPSA-N3,” where the N3 suffix indicates a built-in magnet for non-contact position sensing with magnetic switches.

For sensing, the DSBC uses a standard profile with two sensor slots, allowing proximity switches to be fitted easily for end-position detection. A full range of mounting accessories — flanges, foot mounts, trunnions, and more — supports horizontal, vertical, and pivoting arrangements flexibly.

Selection and Typical Applications

The DSBC is widely used in packaging, assembly, material handling, fixturing, and general machinery where high reliability and reduced setup and maintenance are priorities.
