VPPE Proportional Pressure Regulator: From Manual Adjustment to Closed-Loop Control

Traditional pneumatic regulators are set by hand; when pressure must change dynamically with a process, that means frequent manual intervention — slow and unstable. Festo’s VPPE series proportional pressure regulator replaces manual adjustment with electrical closed-loop control: it regulates output pressure proportionally to an external analog setpoint (0–10 V or 4–20 mA), while a built-in pressure sensor continuously compares the actual value with the setpoint and corrects the valve until output pressure settles on target.

This “set and get” closed-loop control turns pressure into a programmable, remotely adjustable, precisely repeatable process parameter, widely used where precise air pressure is required — tension control, pressing-force control, dispensing, test benches, and pressure command in servo-pneumatic systems.

Precision Specifications Built for Repeatability

The VPPE’s core value is precision. Overall accuracy is about 1.25–1.5% of full scale, linearity error 1% FS, repetition accuracy 0.5% FS, hysteresis 0.5–1% FS, and response sensitivity reaches 0.01 bar. The same setpoint therefore yields nearly identical pressure output across many cycles — directly affecting yield and consistency in processes that depend on stable pressing force or tension.

Three pressure regulation ranges are offered — 0.02–2 bar, 0.06–6 bar, and 0.1–10 bar — covering everything from light-load precision control to higher pressures. The pressure sensor is integrated inside the valve with no external connection, simplifying tubing and wiring.

Designed for the Industrial Floor

The VPPE uses a piloted diaphragm design with electrical actuation and mechanical spring reset, an M12x1 5-pin connector, and IP65 protection for direct use in the field. Supply is 21.6–26.4 V DC at a maximum of 4.2 W, with a selectable analog or PNP switching output. The medium is compressed air to ISO 8573-1:2010 [7:4:4] or inert gases, and lubricated operation is not supported.

Mounting close to the point of use improves control precision and shortens response time. The display-equipped E1 versions add menu prompting, pressure-range setting, three presets, password protection, and switchable setpoint/actual-value display for easy on-site commissioning; select models mount on a profile rail for centralized air supply.

Safety and Selection Essentials

On fault behavior, the VPPE defines clear responses to cable breaks: if the supply-voltage cable breaks, output pressure is held but unregulated; a voltage-setpoint cable break drives output pressure to 0 MPa; a current-setpoint cable break holds output pressure unregulated. Selection should match the setpoint type to the machine’s fail-safe strategy, together with the required pressure range and port size.
