VTSA-F-CB Valve Manifold: Building Functional Safety into the Manifold

In industrial automation, functional safety for pneumatics — especially safe exhausting and preventive start-up — has long depended on external hardwiring, safety relays, and complex electrical loops, bringing high component counts, dense wiring, and long commissioning times. The VTSA-F-CB valve manifold, which Festo introduced to Rockwell Automation customers at Automation Fair, changes that equation: through an integrated serial bus backplane, it embeds functional safety directly into the pneumatic valve manifold, achieving up to Performance Level (PL)-d, Category 3 safety.

For OEMs and end users, that means a compact, modular manifold can replace scattered safety electrical components and bundles of external wiring — reducing component count while dramatically shortening safety-circuit build and commissioning time.

C-Bus Backplane: Plug-and-Play Safety

At the heart of the VTSA-F-CB is the newly added C-Bus integrated backplane, which gives the manifold plug-and-play safety integration. Safe exhausting and preventive start-up are achieved through serial backplane communication, eliminating the need to run external cabling for every safety control path. A single manifold can be divided into up to three safety-shutdown groups, so different zones of a machine can be safely stopped independently rather than de-energizing the whole machine at once.

Festo Product Manager Frank Latino notes that the VTSA-F manifold platform is well established in automotive use, and the C-Bus variant controls downstream valves and devices via the integrated backplane, further reducing the component count and setup time of safety circuits.

One Platform Across Many Valve Types

The VTSA-F-CB is not limited to a single valve type. It works with combinations of pilot air control valves, soft-start exhaust valves, proportional valves, and vacuum generators — covering everything from standard actuation and flexible exhausting to proportional control and vacuum handling. On one line it can handle both ordinary motion control and safety-related pneumatic functions, giving high platform reuse and more uniform spare parts and maintenance.

EtherNet/IP: Safety and Diagnostics in One

On the network side, the VTSA-F-CB interfaces seamlessly with Rockwell PLCs over EtherNet/IP. It enables valve control through safe switched power zones — cutting or restoring pneumatic power to specific valve groups in a controlled way — while monitoring integrated sensors for safety feedback over EtherNet/IP, so the control system always knows the state of the safety circuit. Electrically, its isolated power zones allow zone-level de-energizing without interrupting communication, further separating the safety circuit from the control system.

A single VTSA-F-CB also supports up to 96 valve addresses and up to four voltage zones (three of which can be safely shut down), and can combine five pneumatic valve sizes on one manifold — providing flexible layout space for different flow and function requirements.
