Festo DRVS Semi-Rotary Drive: Vane-Type Oscillating Actuator, Compact Rotation Without Gears | Doskee Automation

Many automation processes call for a reciprocating swing, flip, or direction change — feeding parts, flipping for positioning, stopping, and diverting. Festo’s DRVS semi-rotary drive is built for exactly this angled back-and-forth rotation: it uses a vane design in which compressed air enters alternately through two ports, driving an internal vane to swivel and transmit motion to the drive shaft, converting air pressure directly into rotary movement.
Because the vane converts air energy straight into rotation, the DRVS needs no additional gear ratio, giving it a particularly compact and lightweight build — ideal where space is tight but a dependable swivel motion is required.
Direct Rotation, Compact and Light
The DRVS offers fixed swivel angles of 90°, 180°, and 270° (up to 270°), with adjustable swivel possible via accessories. The drive shaft acts as the load interface for push-on flanges such as PWSR and DARF, while the square on the shaft mounts sensors like the SRBS and stop kits KSM and DADP. The SRBS sensor is quick to fit and infinitely adjustable for detecting swivel position.
Unlike some comparable products, the DRVS has no metal fixed stop, making it lighter, more modern, and more compact. Sizes include DRVS-6, -8, -12, -16, and -25; smaller sizes use M3 pneumatic connections and larger ones M5. Operating pressure is about 2–8 bar, with an ambient temperature range around 0–60 °C (some sources list -10 to 60 °C).
Torque, Frequency, and Cushioning
Theoretical torque spans roughly 0.15 to 20 N·m by size — for example, the DRVS-25 delivers about 5 N·m at 6 bar. Maximum swivel frequency is about 2–3 Hz at 6 bar, with elastic cushioning rings/plates (P variant) absorbing impact at both ends. For higher-inertia loads, observe the permissible mass moment of inertia and maximum swivel frequency to avoid overloading and damaging the internal vane.
Commissioning and Typical Applications
During commissioning, fit one-way flow-control valves to the ports, close them fully then open one turn, pressurize slowly, and perform a test run while watching swivel range and speed to avoid excessive dynamic shock. The DRVS is widely used for part feeding, flipping for positioning, stopping, diverting, and reversing — an economical, efficient rotary drive for light loads.
