DSNU Round Cylinder: Compact ISO 6432 Pneumatic Actuation

When a machine must push, clamp, or eject small parts, an oversized standard cylinder often wastes space and budget. Festo’s DSNU round cylinder is the standard compact drive element built for these applications: with a round body to ISO 6432, it completes everyday positioning, clamping, and ejecting motions in a smaller, more economical package — one of the most widely used basic cylinders in automation.

The DSNU series offers piston diameters from 8 to 63 mm (Festo’s round-cylinder range reaches 100 mm), with strokes from 1 to 500 mm depending on size. At 6 bar, theoretical force spans roughly 30 to 1,870 N, covering everything from small-part handling to medium-load actuation.

Flexible Configuration in a Compact Body

The DSNU uses the classic piston/piston-rod/barrel design. Smaller bores use M5 pneumatic connections, while larger bores use G1/8, G1/4, or G3/8 ports; piston-rod threads range from M4 to M16x1.5. Both double-acting and single-acting versions are available, and piston position can be sensed via proximity switch for easy integration into automated control.

For mounting, the DSNU supports direct mounting (MH variant) or mounting via accessories in any position to suit different machine layouts. For tight installation spaces, a smaller, lighter DSNU-S short-stroke compact variant is offered, plus a DSNUP version with a glass-fibre-reinforced plastic end cap for further weight reduction.

Cushioning and Application Fit

Cushioning is a key selection factor. The DSNU offers three types — elastic (P), adjustable (PPV), and self-adjusting (PPS) — letting users match load speed and impact requirements. The medium is compressed air to ISO 8573-1:2010 [7:4:4], lubricated operation is possible, and the standard ambient temperature range is -20 to +80 °C, with some variants extending to 0 to +120 °C for wider environments.

Typical Applications and Selection

The DSNU round cylinder is widely used in automated assembly, electronics and small-part handling, packaging, and test equipment for positioning, clamping, ejecting, and pushing. Selection should weigh bore diameter (which determines force), stroke, cushioning type, mounting method, and single- or double-acting needs; with a proximity switch and mounting accessories, it quickly builds a reliable basic drive unit.
