Festo EMMS-ST Stepper Motors and CMMT Drives: Compact Electric Motion Control | Doskee Automation
2026-10-29EMMS-ST Stepper Motors and CMMT Drives: Compact Electric Motion Control
When pneumatics fall short of high-precision positioning or programmable-speed requirements, electric drives become the better choice. Festo’s EMMS-ST stepper motors and CMMT drive family form a complete electric drive solution from stepper positioning to servo control, covering point-to-point positioning, synchronization, and interpolation — giving pneumatic-first automation systems a unified, compact selection path for electric actuation.
The EMMS-ST uses 2-phase hybrid stepper technology for small step increments and high driving torque. It is offered in flange sizes 28, 42, 57, and 87, with nominal current of 1.4–9.5 A, 48 V DC, maximum speed of 430–6,000 rpm, and holding torque of 0.09–9.3 N·m — covering most light-positioning to medium-load applications. An incremental encoder enables closed-loop operation, and a holding brake is optional.
CMMT Drives: Compact and Multi-Protocol
Matched to the steppers, the CMMT-ST is a compact stepper-oriented controller for positioning tasks, rated about 300 W and 8 A on 24/48 V DC, suited to point-to-point and interpolating motion. For higher performance, the CMMT-AS brushless servo drive spans 350–4,000 W and 2–15 A on 400 V AC, with auto-tuning and precise force, speed, and position control — among the most compact servo drives on the market.
Both drives support multi-protocol fieldbuses: PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus, and more. The multi-protocol (MP) variant integrates PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus in a single hardware platform, greatly reducing spare-parts and configuration complexity across different controller environments. For safety, the CMMT family offers STO, SS1, and SBC, with SLS optionally available on the CMMT-AS.
Motion Control and Commissioning
The CMMT drives support point-to-point and interpolating motion, electronic camming, synchronization, and interpolation, integrating seamlessly with Siemens, Omron, and Beckhoff controllers. Commissioning uses Festo Automation Suite for parameterization, programming, and maintenance, with a CMMT-AS plug-in that can bring up a drive system in as few as 3–5 steps — significantly cutting on-site commissioning time.
Typical Applications and Selection
The EMMS-ST + CMMT combination is widely used for electric actuators, door control, feeding, and general electric positioning, especially where programmable speed, high repeatability, or synchronized motion is required. Selection should weigh load inertia, torque/force demand, speed, control type (stepper or servo), and fieldbus protocol, then pair with the matching electric actuator or linear axis.
