VZBA Actuated Ball Valve: An Integrated Stainless-Steel Process Valve Unit

In process automation and media handling, the on/off control of media lines often must be automated. Festo’s VZBA actuated ball valve integrates a stainless-steel ball valve with a pneumatic quarter-turn actuator into one unit — connect compressed air and the valve opens and closes automatically, eliminating separate selection and assembly. It is the standard process valve unit for automated media control.

The VZBA is offered in 2/2-way and 3/2-way forms, the 3/2-way with an L-bore or T-bore. Body and ball use high-alloy stainless steel 1.4408 (shaft 1.4401, some AISI 316L) with PTFE-reinforced seals and corrosion resistance class CRC 3, suited to applications with demanding material and sealing requirements.

Media-Oriented Performance

The VZBA process valve is rated PN 63 (63 bar) and handles compressed air to ISO 8573-1:2010, inert gases, water (without water vapor), and neutral liquids, with a medium temperature range of -10 to +200 °C and an ambient range of -10 to +80 °C. Flow coefficient Kv varies by size and bore type, covering roughly 4.8 to 170 m³/h and above to match different pipe diameters.

The unit uses a 90° swivel angle with right-closing action, and the slot direction on the stem equals the flow direction for easy on-site status confirmation. Connections are threaded (Rp/G per EN 10226-1) or weld-on; the three-part design with soft sealing supports reversible flow on 2/2-way versions.

Standardized Interfaces and ATEX Adaptation

The VZBA carries a built-in double-acting or single-acting quarter-turn actuator, with ISO 5211 flange drilling on the process-valve connection and a NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 mounting interface for directly adding solenoid valves and limit-switch attachments — quickly building a complete automated on/off unit. For chemical and petrochemical environments, ATEX-certified versions for Zones 1, 2, 21, and 22 are available.

Typical Applications and Selection

The VZBA actuated ball valve is widely used in water treatment, food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, and general process automation for media on/off control — as a standard process valve unit in new projects or for automated retrofits of existing lines. Selection should weigh medium type, temperature, pressure, size, bore form (2/2 or 3/2 L/T), connection type, and any explosion-protection requirement.
